Hi HP,
My laptop's performance for simple tasks such as email, word processing, and opening PDFS is extremely poor.
The cursor lags when typing.
Additionally, the laptop does not wake up when opening the lid sometimes and hard reset (holding down the power button) is required.
Do you have suggestions?

Hi @BD_Omen_16
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Your HP OMEN 16 laptop experiencing slow performance on simple tasks and wake-up issues can be related to a few common causes. Let's look at the troubleshooting steps to address these issues:
Slow Performance
Poor performance on basic tasks, such as email, word processing, and opening PDFs, might be due to processor overheating or a full hard drive. Here are the steps you can take to resolve these issues:
Processor Overheating:
- Verify that airflow to the computer is not blocked.
- Ensure chassis fans are connected and working properly.
- Confirm the processor heat sink is installed correctly.
Full Hard Drive:
- Transfer data to free up some space on the hard drive; Microsoft recommends at least 200 MB of free space.
- Perform disk defragmentation to consolidate fragmented data on the hard drive for more efficient operation.
Additional Tips:
- Update BIOS and drivers using HP Support Assistant to ensure the latest versions are installed.
- Open Task Manager and check for any applications consuming high system resources. Ending unnecessary processes may improve performance.
Laptop Fails to Wake Up
When the laptop does not wake up from a power management state (like Sleep or Hibernate) and requires a hard reset, follow these steps:
Verify Front Power Light:
- Check if the front power light is blinking, indicating it's in Sleep mode. Press the power button to exit Sleep mode.
Reset BIOS:
- Reset the BIOS to default settings, often related to OS Power Management in the Power Menu.
Check Power Management Settings:
- Verify and possibly disable Sleep options in Windows Power Options if the issue persists.
Screen Saver Settings:
- Ensure the screen saver settings are configured correctly. Press any key or touch the touchpad to resume activity.
Toggle Display Choice:
- Verify that Display Choice is set correctly. Use the screen control key combination fn + f4 or Windows logo + P to toggle between display options.
