When I attempt to wake the computer from sleep, I hear and see the computer wake up but the monitors don't. If I unplug and replug in the HDMI cables the monitors will then wake up. I've tried adjusting all the display and power settings and also updating and reinstalling the drivers. Any help is much appreciated.

@gruberm, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Monitors Won't Wake Up from Sleep!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
When your monitors don't wake up from sleep, this can often be resolved by adjusting settings or troubleshooting connections. Here are a series of steps you can follow to attempt to resolve this issue:
Steps to Resolve:
Check the Display Cables:
- Ensure all video cables are connected securely.
- Inspect HDMI cables for damage and replace them if necessary.
Change Power Settings on the Monitor:
- Access the monitor's On-Screen Display (OSD) menu.
- Set "DP Hot-Plug Detection" to "Always Active" if this option is available.
Update Display Drivers:
- Make sure your display drivers are up to date. You can update your display drivers from the HP website or directly from the graphics hardware manufacturer's websites:
Adjust Power Settings on the Computer:
- In Windows, go to Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings.
- Make sure your refresh rate matches the native resolution of your monitor.
- Check for any power setting adjustments needed on Windows.
Test with Different Types of Connections:
- If your monitor has multiple types of connection ports, try connecting using USB Type-C, DisplayPort instead of HDMI, and vice versa.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi, I went through the troubleshooting step you shared and haven't had any luck with solving the problem. Any other troubleshooting steps that could be the issue? This is very annoying and has been occurring since the computer was brand new. I'm just getting around to fixing it now.
I did notice that my monitors are showing different refresh rates under "Advanced Display". One has a max refresh rate of 60hz while the other is 75hz. I'm not sure why this is the case. The monitors are exactly the same (75hz refresh rate), have the same cables and drivers installed. I can't tell why one would be capped at 60hz while the other is 75hz.

@gruberm, welcome back—and thanks for sticking with us through the troubleshooting!
I completely get how frustrating it is when your system wakes up but the screens stay stubbornly black. It's like the monitors are still snoozing while everything else is ready to go!
Given your monitors are the same make and model but showing different refresh rates, that is odd and might be a clue. Sometimes Windows doesn't automatically detect the correct specs, especially if one HDMI handshake doesn’t go smoothly during wake.
Here are a few more targeted steps:
🛠️ Try This:
Manually Set Refresh Rates:
Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings.
Set both monitors to 75Hz manually.
Make sure they’re extended and not duplicated—this sometimes messes with refresh rate configs.
Turn Off Fast Startup:
Search for "Power Options" > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable.
Uncheck "Turn on fast startup" and save.
This helps avoid handshake issues on wake.
BIOS & Chipset Updates:
Head to the HP Support site with your exact model number.
Look for BIOS and chipset driver updates—these often resolve sleep/wake glitches.
Try a Different HDMI Port or Cable Temporarily:
Even though your cables are the same, there might be a subtle fault or version mismatch. Try swapping the ports or cables to see if the issue follows.
Let us know if your monitors finally start waking up in sync—it’ll be a joy to hear that crisp flicker of screens coming to life properly!
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
